| Cheryl Thomas joined NIAD Art Center almost 5 years
ago and has lately focused on printmaking with woodcut and linoleum plates.
Unlike her carefree approach towards her paintings and drawings, Thomas is deep
in thought with her new medium. Rather than following the traditional process
of initially using lighter ink colors under darker tones, Thomas freely selects
black as her first tone, and then overprints with lighter, brighter colors.
Ms. Thomas tests each color shift, one layer over the next, until she is
satisfied.
For Thomas, printmaking proves to be the intellectual medium of choice, and
she continues to grow as an artist and as an independent thinker.
Born on February 18, 1969, Ms. Thomas moved to Oakland, CA from Louisiana in 1994.
She attended high school in Louisiana and is the 12th of 14 children.
Thomas's work was recently on display in 2005 at NIAD's "SEEN Not Spoken" exhibit
in Richmond and at the NIAD/John F. Kennedy University's Berkeley exhibit,
"The Dreaming Mind : The Conscious Mind."
