Ellen Smedley works in a playful narrative style to create colorful line drawings. Some are of her family and friends, and some are of different animals and people occasionally aloft on kites or balloons, while others are of flying objects such as birds, angels and airplanes.

Smedley also works well in paint, clay, prints and fabrics. One of her prints was selected for a T-shirt design for the 1995 AIDS Walk sponsored by Citibank, while one of her puppets appeared in a 1997 NIAD art exhibit at Berlex Biosciences headquarters in Richmond. Since 1995 when Smedley first came to NIAD at age 38, her work has appeared in Shanghai, China and in other NIAD exhibits.

Born with Down Syndrome, Smedley graduated from high school special education classes in 1976 and developed skills in making hook rugs, embroidery and needlepoint. She lives with her sister's family and their cats.
