Joseph "Dan" McIntyre was already 49 years old when he came to NIAD Art Center in 1986. In the many ensuing years, his work has changed and strengthened with his increased concentration on the infinite small details of his excellent draftsmanship and use of color.

Although he worked in mosaic-like patterns of color since he began painting, printmaking, and drawing at NIAD, Joseph's work has evolved in terms of precision and mastery. Some of his later pieces, which look like brightly colored mazes or roadmaps to some unknown destination, have a sureness of design reminiscent of the work of Stella. His concentration on his art is intense; he sometimes takes hours with the smallest detail, and thus all his work, both abstract and figurative, have an invitingly "finished" quality. As well as having the creativity of a fine artist, McIntyre demonstrates the dedication of an accomplished craftsman. When asked what he likes best about producing art, he responds, "It makes me feel good."

McIntyre's work has been exhibited at many shows in NIAD, as well as at a number of outside exhibits: Art From the Heart at the Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco CA in 1997; Group shows at the Cal Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and the Westside Café in Berkeley in 1993; and the Very Special Arts Gallery in Washington, D.C. among many other venues.
