Michael Starosky first came to the NIAD Art Center in 2002 at the age of 48.
He had previously expressed an interest in art but had never worked in any art medium with
particular intensity.
It did not take Starosky long, however, to find his ability in verbal skills and
poetry, drawing and illustration, and interesting and delightful work in clay.
He is currently also working at printmaking and his work is taking on a distinctive style
of its own, characterized by a semi-realistic, rather humorous style which embodies his own
quiet sense of humor.
Of all the artwork that he does at the NIAD Art Center, Michael says that he likes
drawing in colors and working in clay the most. He has made many fascinating
ceramic whales, which have shown both in the NIAD gift shop and in various
exhibits. Starosky also depicts a recurring theme in his drawings, paintings
and prints-the profile of a human head with an exaggerated nose, lips and
chin.
When asked what he finds so interesting about the whales, he says,
"I think they're neat!"
