| Rosita Pardo paints and sculpts figures in the
naïve or folk art tradition, drawing from sources as diverse as the Bible,
early American Indian lore, the boxing and entertainment worlds, and most
recently, the Egyptian and Medieval periods. "I like to do my art in my own
way," she says, "without anyone telling me what to do."
In her paintings and drawings, Pardo places her subjects-be they human,
animal or plant life-in a context and integrates her scenes with a quiet
harmony of colors. A Native American appears in a serene landscape surrounded
by trees, an elk, pumpkins and pottery. Jesus is portrayed on the cross
with the mourning women at the base. A king is shown in his throne surrounded
by signs of wealth.
Since coming to NIAD in 1987 at the age of 51, Pardo has shown her work
in a number of galleries including the Memorial Union Gallery at the
University of California, Davis, the Very Special Arts Gallery in
Washington, D.C., and the Richmond Art Center. Her work also has
been shown in Shanghai, China.
Most recently, Pardo's "Religious Triptych" and two masterfully sculpted
ceramic masks were on display at the Concourse Gallery in San Francisco.
The April 2005 exhibit was entitled, "The Amazing World of NIAD Art
Center."
