| Internships for credit from sponsoring universities
or colleges are available at anytime during the year and can be focused in one of the following areas or you can choose to combine the two positions.
Teaching Assistant
As a teaching assistant interns work alongside one of NIAD’s trained teaching staff. All of NIAD’s teachers are practicing artists with Master’s of Fine Arts degrees in each of their discipline’s. Interns will assist their assigned teachers with classroom management and will help individual clients on their respective projects. Studio interns are trained in all aspects
of service to the artists and instructors, including: preparation
of materials and supplies, interpersonal communication skills, limit-setting, and facilitation of artists' work in painting,
drawing, ceramics, printmaking and textiles.
Exhibitions Assistant
In the exhibitions department, interns will work with the gallery director to further the goals of NIAD’s exhibitions department including accessibility of artwork for curators, collectors, and the general public via the internet and connections with outside galleries. Interns may also gain experience organizing exhibitions, designing announcements, managing the NIAD gift shop, preparing art for shipment, and working with art consultants.
Special Projects
The overarching concept of the internship of service and learning will be manifested in a project of the student-intern's own design. This project may be interactive between the two phases of their work at NIAD (studio and exhibitions) and may take a variety of forms including curating an exhibit, collaborating on a public art project, and so on.
General Information
Individuals interested in learning about the presentation of artwork and writing proposals are encouraged to apply. It is preferred that applicants be familiar with digital cameras, photoshop, and dreamweaver; although it is not a requirement. Strong writing skills are a plus. Potential interns should be aware that the population that NIAD serves are adults with disabilities. Training will be provided to ensure that students can contribute to our safe and secure studio environment. Knowledge and/or interest of Outsider and Folk Art are a plus since our artists' work tends to fall into that category and is marketed as such.
This internship is a great opportunity to get involved in a non-profit arts organization with a proven track record in the for-profit arts world. It is a good fit for anyone interested in working in exhibitions or teaching at any level. The variety of possibilities for shaping your work at NIAD is extensive and we hope you consider joining our team of professionals.
How to Apply
Please send a cover letter and resume to admin@niadart.org. Once your materials have been reviewed NIAD will contact you for an interview to visit NIAD and discuss your potential internship.
